What is student van insurance?

Student van insurance is temporary van insurance for eligible students who need to drive a suitable van for a short period. It can be useful when you’re moving to university, changing student accommodation or collecting belongings from storage.

Rather than being a separate annual type of van insurance for students, it’s Dayinsure temporary van insurance applied to student needs. Cover is currently available from 1 hour to 30 days, so you can arrange short-term van insurance for the period you need.

Our temporary van cover is designed for eligible short-term uses, including borrowing a suitable van for a university move.

How do I get student van insurance?

Whether you’re borrowing a mate’s van for moving day or hiring one to move your things between houses, you’ll need student van insurance before you can drive.

Step 1

Fill in our simple quote form

All we need is a few details about you, including your driving licence number and information about the motorhome you want to drive.

Step 2

We’ll give you a price

Tell us how long you need cover for, when you’d like it to start, and whether you require any add-ons such as excess protection.

Step 3

Pay and drive away

To finalise your temporary drive away insurance, you’ll just need your debit or credit card.

When might I need temporary van insurance as a student?

Temporary van insurance for moving can be useful when you need more space than a car provides but only need to drive the van for a short time. You might consider student temporary van insurance when:

  • Moving into halls for the first time? You’ll need cover on a van to get everything there, temporary insurance makes it simple..
  • Heading back with more than you brought home? You’ll need your own cover on a borrowed or hired van.
  • Collecting what you left over summer? You’ll need insurance on a van for the round trip.
  • Swapping halls for a house share? You’ll need van insurance in place before you can drive away.
  • Changing address mid-year? You’ll need cover for the move without adding a van to your annual policy.
  • Tenancy up and everything to shift? You’ll need van insurance for as long as the move takes.

What does student van insurance cover?

Dayinsure temporary van insurance currently provides comprehensive cover for the eligible van during the period shown on your policy.

Cover includes:

  • Loss or damage to the insured van
  • Accidental damage
  • Damage to other people’s property
  • Compensation for injury to others
  • Personal belongings up to £150, subject to policy terms

Temporary van insurance isn’t the same as removals or contents insurance. If you’re moving student belongings such as a laptop, TV, monitor or specialist course equipment, check whether you need separate protection for higher-value possessions.

Rental vans aren’t covered under Dayinsure temporary van insurance.

You can check the full cover, conditions and exclusions in the Insurance Product Information Document before arranging your policy.

Useful for borrowed vans

Cover may be available when borrowing an eligible van with the owner’s permission.

No annual van policy needed for a short move

Arrange cover for the period you need rather than taking out annual van insurance solely for your university move.

Suitable for many standard vans

Eligible vans can currently be up to 3.5t GVW, subject to the full vehicle criteria.

Who is eligible for student van insurance?

Students can get Dayinsure temporary van insurance if both the driver and van meet the current acceptance criteria.

Driver criteria

To be eligible, you must:

  • Be aged between 18 and 75
  • Hold a full GB driving licence
  • Have held your full licence for at least six months, reduced to three months if you’re over 25
  • Permanently live at a UK address
  • Have permission from the van owner

Being 18 or over doesn’t automatically mean you’ll qualify for young driver van insurance. You also need to meet the licence-history requirements and our other checks.

This is particularly important if you’re looking for temporary van insurance under 25, as you may not qualify if you’ve only recently passed your test.

Van criteria

The van must:

  • Have a maximum GVW of 3.5 tonnes
  • Have eight seats or fewer
  • Have a market value below £75,000
  • Be registered in Great Britain, Northern Ireland or the Isle of Man
  • Not be a rental van

GVW means gross vehicle weight. This is the maximum permitted total weight of the van, including the van itself, passengers and load.

Can I borrow someone else’s van to move to university?

Yes, you may be able to insure a van belonging to a parent, relative or friend for your university move if the owner gives permission and the van meets our criteria.

Don’t assume your existing car insurance covers you to drive a van. Check your cover before setting off. If you aren’t already covered, temporary insurance for a borrowed van may be a suitable short-term option.

If you’re borrowing a van for moving, you’ll need the owner’s permission and appropriate insurance before you drive.

That applies whether you’re borrowing a parent’s van, a family member’s van or a friend’s van. Dayinsure temporary van insurance doesn’t cover rental vans, so if you’re hiring one, check the insurance arrangements provided by the rental company.

Student van insurance FAQs

In case you have any more questions about our student van insurance, we’ve answered some of the ones that are frequently asked.

Yes. Students may be eligible for Dayinsure temporary van insurance from age 18, but you must meet the full driver and van acceptance criteria. This includes licence-history requirements, so being a student or meeting the minimum age doesn’t automatically mean you’ll qualify.

Yes, an 18-year-old may be eligible. Under Dayinsure’s current criteria, drivers aged under 25 must have held a full GB driving licence for at least six months and meet all other driver and van acceptance criteria.

Yes, potentially. You’ll need the owner’s permission and appropriate insurance for borrowing a van, and both you and the van must meet Dayinsure’s eligibility criteria. Don’t assume your parent’s existing van insurance automatically covers you to drive it.

Don’t assume it does. Car insurance policies vary, so check the terms of your existing cover before driving someone else’s van. If you aren’t covered, temporary van insurance may be an option if you and the van meet Dayinsure’s eligibility criteria.

Students who need to borrow a car rather than a van can consider temporary student car insurance, subject to the relevant eligibility criteria.

Yes, subject to eligibility. Dayinsure currently offers temporary van insurance from 1 hour up to 30 days, so you can arrange one day van insurance if that’s all you need for your university move.

You can share the driving if each person has appropriate insurance. Under Dayinsure’s current temporary van product, another driver can’t simply be added to the same temporary policy. A second eligible driver can arrange their own temporary cover.

No. Dayinsure’s current temporary van insurance doesn’t cover rental vans. If you’re hiring a van from a rental company for your university move, check the insurance it provides and whether you need any additional rental-vehicle cover.

Dayinsure’s current temporary van insurance includes personal belongings cover up to £150, subject to policy conditions. This isn’t full removals or contents insurance, so check whether valuable belongings such as laptops, monitors or course equipment need separate protection.

There’s no standard price. Your quote depends on factors including the van you’re insuring, how long you need cover and your individual circumstances. The quickest way to find your exact student van insurance price is to get a quote.
