What is weekend car insurance?

Car insurance for a weekend is a type of short-term insurance that covers you to drive a vehicle for a few days. You can drive a car for the whole weekend, knowing that you’re fully covered.

Weekend car insurance is ideal for getting behind the wheel of your own car or for borrowing another vehicle. It’s a great way to insure a car for a weekend away.

With our flexible weekend cover, you can relax safe in the knowledge that you’re fully insured. Plus, your policy can be arranged in just 15 minutes, leaving you free to get on the road no matter what your last-minute plans are.

To get a quote, all you need is:

  • Your name, your current, permanent UK address, date of birth, and email address
  • The vehicle’s registration number
  • Your GB driving licence number.

Why take out car insurance for the weekend?

There are many reasons why you might prefer to insure a car for a weekend rather than take out an annual policy. Naturally, annual policies typically work out cheaper over 12 months. But if you only need to drive a vehicle for a weekend, short-term cover is usually the more cost-effective option.

If you need cover at short notice, our weekend car insurance policies can provide a flexible option and can have you covered in under 15 minutes. There’s no need to run the risk of illegally driving uninsured.

Another reason for taking out weekend car insurance is to ensure you’ve got fully comprehensive cover for the time you need it. Despite the misconceptions, many annual policies don’t cover you to drive another vehicle. And, if they do, you’re likely to only be covered for damage to a third party.

But, as our cover is a whole separate policy, you’ll be properly insured on your chosen vehicle for the entire weekend. And it means you won’t have the hassle and expense of amending any current policy. What’s more, any other car insurance policies you do have won’t be affected when you take out weekend cover with Dayinsure.

When might weekend car insurance be needed?

There are a few situations where weekend car insurance might be the ideal solution:

  • Perhaps you’re going on a weekend break and wish to share the responsibility with another driver
  • If you’re borrowing a motorhome or campervan, temporary motorhome insurance could be suitable
  • The main policyholder is ill or unavailable
  • Your car is in the garage for repairs
  • Your car is in the garage or waiting for an MOT
  • Collecting a new vehicle before your annual policy is finalised
  • Weekend car insurance offers short-term cover while you arrange your main policy
  • You need to drive at short notice due to an unexpected situation

We can also provide cover for just one or two days over the weekend, which might be handy if you’re borrowing a car while yours is in the garage, or to make use of another vehicle to transport items. Don’t forget, we also provide temporary van insurance if you need to borrow a larger vehicle to move furniture or to help someone relocate.

It might be possible to extend your policy through your account either on our website, via the app or by clicking manage policy and view documents in your email notification. You can extend your policy a maximum of three times or up to 30 days from the original policy date. If you need to amend your policy or include any extras, you’ll need to get a new quote.

If you’re a learner driver wanting to get some extra practice with a friend or family member, our temporary learner driver insurance could be just what you’re looking for. This cover is tailored to provisional licence holders who need short-term insurance while learning to drive.

Our policies provide third-party cover across European countries.

The weekend car insurance policy is only valid in the EU, if the vehicle being insured is located in Great Britain, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, at the policy start date and time and at policy end date and time.

You may be able to add fully comprehensive cover to drive abroad in Europe as an optional extra. See our help and support page to find out more.

Our cancellation policy means you can cancel at any time with a refund for any unused premiums, provided no claim has been made.

There are two options for you to cancel your weekend car insurance policy:

Option 1 – Please sign into your Dayinsure Customer Access account – click on the cancel button of the live policy you would like to cancel and follow the on-screen instructions.

Option 2 – Click the manage policy and view documents button in your confirmation email, confirm your details, click on the cancel button and then follow the on-screen instructions.

The amount of excess you’ll need to pay will depend on your individual circumstances and vehicle details, but the exact figure will be confirmed before you purchase your weekend car insurance. Your excess details will then be provided on your insurance certificate.

Yes! You may already have an annual policy that covers you to drive your own vehicle but, if you want to borrow a car for a short period of time, then weekend car insurance could be the perfect solution.

Chances are, the vehicle’s owner already has a main insurance policy, but they can be reassured that any No Claims Discount won’t be affected by any temporary cover you take out.

Any other driver would need to take out their own, separate insurance. If you’re planning on splitting the driving on a borrowed vehicle with someone else, then both of you should take out individual policies to insure the car for a weekend.

We guarantee to update the Motor Insurance Database (MID) every seven days or sooner but we do recommend that you carry your insurance certificate with you for the time that you’re covered for. Our app also stores your documents in one central location and makes it easy to access your insurance certificate from anywhere.
