Can you insure a borrowed van to collect furniture?

Yes. You can insure an eligible van borrowed from a friend or family member, provided you have the owner’s permission and both you and the van meet our acceptance criteria.

Your temporary policy is separate from the owner’s annual insurance, so there’s no need to add you to their policy simply for a short collection.

Before you drive, make sure:

  • The owner has agreed to let you use the van.
  • The van meets our vehicle criteria.
  • You meet our driver criteria.
  • Your temporary policy has started.
  • You’ve chosen enough time to complete the trip and return the van.

If you’re borrowing the vehicle, make sure you understand what to consider when insuring someone else’s van before you drive.

Can you use a car to collect furniture?

Yes. If the furniture fits safely inside an eligible car, you don’t need a van simply because you’re collecting something bulky.

A car could be enough for smaller tables, flat-pack furniture, chairs or other items that can be loaded without blocking your view or affecting your ability to control the vehicle.

Make sure everything is secure before setting off. Furniture shouldn’t obstruct your windows, mirrors or controls, and loose items should be restrained so they can’t move around while you’re driving.

For larger pieces, a van may be the more practical option. Our temporary van insurance gives eligible drivers comprehensive cover from 1 hour to 30 days.

Tell us how long you need cover for, when you’d like it to start, and whether you require any add-ons such as excess protection.

Step 3

Pay and drive away

To finalise your temporary drive away insurance, you’ll just need your debit or credit card.

Can you get temporary insurance just to collect furniture?

Yes. If you only need a car or van for one furniture collection, temporary insurance can give you cover for that specific trip without arranging an annual policy. You could use it to:

  • If you only need a van for that one collection, temporary insurance can cover you for the trip without arranging an annual policy.
  • If you’ve arranged to collect in person, temporary insurance can give you cover for that specific journey.
  • If you’re driving someone else’s van, temporary insurance can cover you in your own name without affecting their policy.
  • If the shop doesn’t deliver, short-term insurance can cover you on a borrowed or hired van for the day.
  • If you’re shifting things from one address to another, temporary insurance can cover you on a van for as long as the move takes.
  • If you’re lending a hand for the day, temporary insurance can cover you on their van or a hired one without adding you to an annual policy.

Does temporary van insurance cover the furniture?

Temporary van insurance covers you to drive the insured vehicle. It isn’t goods-in-transit insurance.

Dayinsure motor policies include limited cover for personal belongings up to £150, but that shouldn’t be treated as insurance for the full purchase or replacement value of a sofa, wardrobe, table or other furniture.

If insuring the value of the furniture while it’s being transported is important to you, you’ll need to consider separate cover for the goods themselves.

Can you insure a rented van to collect furniture?

No. We don’t cover rental or hired vans.

An eligible van borrowed from a friend or family member may potentially be covered if you have the owner’s permission and meet our criteria. A van rented or hired from a rental company can’t be insured through Dayinsure.

If you’re borrowing rather than hiring a van, make sure you have the owner’s permission and that the vehicle is suitable for your plans. There are also a few things to check before borrowing a van to help you prepare before you drive.

How long can you insure a car or van for?

You can get Dayinsure temporary car or van insurance for 1 hour to 30 days.

That gives you plenty of flexibility for a furniture collection:

  • A few hours: Useful for a nearby collection when you know exactly what you’re picking up.
  • One day: Gives you more room for a longer journey, loading delays or several stops.
  • Several days: Useful if you have more than one personal collection planned.

Don’t cut the policy duration too fine.

Allow time to reach the seller, inspect and load the furniture, drive it home, unload and return the vehicle. Traffic, awkward staircases and a wardrobe that turns out to be rather less dismantled than promised can all add time.

If you only need a short window, take a look at how van insurance for a few hours works with Dayinsure.

Who can get temporary furniture collection insurance?

You and the vehicle need to meet our acceptance criteria.

For Dayinsure’s Aviva temporary car and van policy, the main driver criteria include:

  • You must usually be aged 18 to 75, although the minimum age can vary with individual circumstances.
  • You must hold a current full GB driving licence.
  • You must have held that licence for at least 6 months, reduced to 3 months if you’re over 25.
  • You must live at a permanent UK address.
  • You must have the vehicle owner’s permission to drive it.
  • You must meet the policy’s claims, conviction and driving-history criteria.

The car or van must also:

  • Be registered in Great Britain, Northern Ireland or the Isle of Man.
  • Have a current market value below £75,000.
  • Have an engine of 3999cc or less.
  • Weigh no more than 3.5 tonnes GVW.
  • Have no more than eight seats including the driver’s seat.
  • Not be a hire or rental vehicle.
  • Meet the policy’s rules on modifications and imports.

Check the full current car and van acceptance criteria before buying cover.
