Temporary classic car insurance FAQs
Have any questions about Dayinsure classic car insurance? We’ve put together the answers to our most frequently asked questions below.
Dayinsure can provide temporary classic car insurance for vehicles up to 61 years old, subject to underwriting and vehicle criteria. There’s no official UK definition of a ‘classic car’, but in practice we look at the vehicle’s age, value and whether it meets our standard acceptance criteria. Modified vehicles, kit cars, vehicles imported from outside the UK or cars valued above our standard market value cap may not be covered – it’s worth checking before you start a quote if your car falls into one of these categories.
Yes. Temporary classic car insurance is a common choice for buyers test-driving a classic before purchase, whether you’re meeting a private seller, viewing at a dealer or attending a classic car auction. You can choose cover from 1 hour upwards, and the policy is in your name, so any claim is settled under your policy rather than the seller’s. You’ll need the seller’s permission and the car’s registration details.
Yes. Drive-home cover for newly bought classic cars is one of the most common reasons people take out temporary classic car insurance. The policy can be arranged in advance and set to start at the exact time you’ll collect the car, giving you cover for the journey home while you arrange longer-term annual or specialist classic insurance.
Not necessarily. Dayinsure prices each policy based on the driver, the vehicle and the duration of cover, rather than charging a flat classic-car premium. Some classic vehicles will price higher than a modern equivalent because of repair costs or parts availability, but lower-value classics often sit in line with or below standard short-term cover. Get a quote to see the price for the specific car you’re insuring.
No. Dayinsure temporary classic car insurance pays out based on market value at the time of claim, rather than an agreed value figure set at the start of the policy. If your classic is high-value, rare or has had significant restoration work, an annual specialist classic policy with agreed value cover is usually the better choice for long-term ownership – temporary cover suits short-term needs like test drives, drive-home journeys, occasional use or covering another driver for a short period.
It depends on the modifications. Standard restoration work and original-specification rebuilds are generally fine. Performance modifications, body kits, non-standard engines or significantly altered classics may not meet Dayinsure’s vehicle acceptance criteria – the policy is underwritten on the basis that the car is in standard or restored-to-standard condition. If you’re unsure, check the acceptance criteria document or get in touch before completing a quote.
Yes. You can take out short-term cover from 1 hour up to 30 days to drive your classic to and from a show, rally or club event, share the driving with a friend on the way, or cover someone else to drive the car at the event. The cover is for normal road use – it doesn’t extend to track sessions, racing or competitive driving on closed roads.
Yes. They can take out their own temporary classic car insurance in their name to drive your vehicle. This is often simpler than adding them to an annual policy, especially for occasional use, and any claim would be settled under their temporary policy rather than affecting your own annual cover or No Claims Discount.
Dayinsure temporary classic car insurance includes third-party cover for travel in EU and EEA countries and Switzerland, as long as the policy starts and ends with the car in the UK. You can upgrade to comprehensive European cover when you complete the quote. Bear in mind some European countries require additional documents like an International Driving Permit, so check the latest gov.uk guidance before you travel.
