It’s 1:30am. Your phone buzzes. You’ve been asked to cover an urgent 2am care shift, but your usual transport isn’t available.

Maybe your car won’t start. Maybe someone else in your household needs it. Or maybe you need to borrow a partner’s or family member’s car so you can get to work.

When time is tight, insurance needs to be simple.

With Dayinsure, eligible drivers can arrange temporary car insurance online or on the app, including at unsociable hours. You can choose a start time that suits your journey and, if we can offer cover, your documents will be sent to you by email.

This guide explains how temporary car insurance can help carers, support workers, agency staff and bank care workers get covered quickly before an urgent shift.

Can you get same-day car insurance at night?

Yes. You can arrange Dayinsure same day car insurance at any time of the day or night.

If you’re eligible, you can choose cover that starts later the same day or at another time that suits your journey. That can help if you need car insurance for a 2am shift, temporary insurance for a night shift or cover for an urgent journey to work.

The important thing is timing.

You are only insured once:

  • Your application has been accepted.
  • Your policy has been arranged.
  • The start time shown on your certificate has arrived.

Do not drive before the start time on your certificate, even if you’ve already paid. Your certificate is the document that confirms the start time and duration of your cover.

Is your journey commuting or business use?

When you arrange temporary car insurance for a care shift, your cover needs to match the journey you’re making.

With Dayinsure, cover is the same for all eligible drivers. You can’t choose a separate class of use during the quote process, so it’s important to check that the journey you need to make is covered before you buy.

For example, you may need to check your cover if you’re:

  • Driving between care clients
  • Travelling from one care home to another work location
  • Driving to different client addresses
  • Working as a domiciliary carer
  • Doing agency or bank shifts in different places
  • Using the car for work journeys during your shift

If you’re unsure, don’t guess. Check the policy documents before driving and make sure the journey you plan to make is included.

Self-employed and agency carers

If you work for an agency, do bank shifts or work as a self-employed support worker, your journeys can change from shift to shift.

You may be driving to one workplace, travelling between care locations or visiting clients during your shift. Before you drive, check that the journey you need to make is covered by the policy.

It’s also worth checking what your employer does and doesn’t provide. A mileage allowance helps cover costs such as fuel and wear on your car. It doesn’t automatically mean your driving is insured.

Before you drive to a shift, check:

  • Where you’re driving
  • Whether you’re going to one workplace or several
  • Whether you’ll drive between clients
  • Whether you’ll carry work equipment
  • Whether your journey is covered by the policy
  • Whether the policy starts before you set off and lasts until after you get home

With Dayinsure, cover is the same for all eligible drivers. You can’t choose a separate class of use during the quote process, so always check your documents and product terms before driving.

How to classify your care work journeys

To help you choose the right cover, use the table below to see how common care journeys are classified.

JourneyWhat you need to check
Home to the same care homeThis may be treated as commuting if you travel between home and one regular workplace
Home to a client’s private addressThis may require business use
One client’s home to anotherThis may require business use
Care home to another work locationThis may require business use
Transporting a service userCheck the Dayinsure product terms carefully before buying
Carrying medication or equipmentCheck the Dayinsure product terms before buying

These examples are only a guide. Your policy needs to match your actual journey.

If your work involves driving between care clients, temporary business car insurance may be the right fit.

Can you insure someone else’s car for a care shift?

Borrowing a car with permission

Yes, if you’re eligible, you can arrange temporary insurance for someone else’s car, provided you have the owner’s permission and the vehicle meets the policy requirements.

To do this legally, you must have the owner’s permission to drive the car and arrange your own standalone insurance. Simply having the owner’s permission doesn’t make you legally insured, and having a comprehensive policy on your own car doesn’t automatically cover you to drive other vehicles.

What if the car doesn’t have an annual policy?

Many people worry about whether they can insure a car that doesn’t have an annual policy in place. At Dayinsure, you can arrange temporary cover on a vehicle even if there’s no active primary annual policy.

However, you must be aware of Continuous Insurance Enforcement (CIE) rules. In the UK, it’s illegal to keep an uninsured vehicle on a public road, so the car must be parked on private land when your temporary policy ends.

If the car you’re borrowing doesn’t have an annual policy, we’ve explained how temporary car insurance works in more detail in our guide to temporary car insurance without an underlying policy.

Your quick decision checklist

Before you head out into the night, work through this rapid checklist to ensure everything is in order:

1. Do you have the owner’s clear permission to borrow the car?

2. Do you meet the basic eligibility criteria for temporary cover?

3. Is the car eligible to be insured under a short-term policy?

4. Does your chosen policy cover the specific business journeys you’ll make?

5. Has your application been accepted and has your policy start time arrived?

6. Has the start time printed on your digital certificate arrived?

What do you need to get cover from your phone?

When you’re parked up or trying to leave the house quickly, you don’t want to spend hours searching for paperwork. You can complete our application on your smartphone if you have the right details ready:

  • Your full name, date of birth and current home address
  • Your employment status and occupation details
  • Your UK driving licence number
  • The registration number of the car you wish to drive
  • The exact time you want the cover to start and finish
  • A valid debit or credit card for payment
  • Clear permission from the vehicle owner if the car isn’t yours

Once your payment is processed, we’ll email your insurance certificate once your policy has been arranged. We highly recommend downloading this digital certificate directly to your phone.

It can take up to seven days for new policies to show on the national Motor Insurance Database (MID). Having the digital file on your phone gives you a copy of your insurance certificate to keep with you.

How long should your temporary cover last?

Choosing the right length of cover takes a little planning. With Dayinsure, you can choose cover for an hour, a day, a weekend, a week or 30 days depending on what you need and subject to eligibility.

Make sure your cover lasts for the full time you’ll be responsible for the car, not just the hours you’re working.

For example, if your shift runs from 10pm to 6am, you’ll also need to think about the journey to work, handover time, possible delays and the drive home. If your cover ends before you’ve finished driving, you won’t be covered by that policy.

Choose a cover period that gives you enough time before and after your shift, especially if you’re working overnight or travelling between care locations. Don’t continue driving once your cover has expired.

FAQs about same-day car insurance

Can I get car insurance that starts immediately?

With Dayinsure, eligible drivers can get temporary car insurance that starts in as little as 15 minutes. Your cover only begins at the start time shown on your certificate, so don’t drive before that time, even if your policy has already been arranged.

Can I choose exactly when my cover starts?

Yes. During your quote, you can choose the policy start time that matches your plans. This can help if you need cover for a late-night shift, early start or short-notice journey. Always check your certificate before driving.

Can I buy cover now for a shift starting later tonight?

Yes. You can arrange cover online and choose a start time that matches your planned journey. Your policy only starts at the date and time shown on your certificate, so make sure the start time is before you need to drive.

Do carers need business car insurance?

You may need business car insurance if you drive between care clients, visit different work locations or use the car for work beyond commuting to one regular workplace. If you only drive from home to one regular workplace, commuting may be enough. Check your journey before buying.

Can I use temporary car insurance for an overnight care shift?

Yes, if you’re eligible and the journey fits the policy. Choose a cover period that includes the drive to work, the full shift, handover time, delays and the drive home. Don’t set the end time too close to the end of your shift.

Can I borrow someone else’s car for a care shift?

Yes, if you have the owner’s permission and valid insurance for that car. Dayinsure temporary car insurance can help eligible drivers borrow a car at short notice. Make sure your selected class of use matches the care journey you need to make.

Can I arrange temporary cover entirely from my phone?

Yes. You can complete your Dayinsure quote online using your phone, as long as you have the information you need. Once your policy is arranged, we’ll email your insurance certificate so you can keep it with you.

Is breakdown assistance included?

No. Breakdown assistance is never automatically included with Dayinsure temporary car insurance.

If you need breakdown cover, you’ll need to add it separately when arranging your policy. Check the product information before buying so you understand exactly what’s included before you drive.

When will my policy appear on the Motor Insurance Database?

Temporary policies may not always appear straight away on Navigate, the central record of insured vehicles in the UK. Your certificate confirms your cover and start time, so keep a copy on your phone in case you need proof before the record updates.
