What is temporary motorhome insurance?

Temporary motorhome insurance is a type of policy that offers short-term cover on a motorhome or campervan.

Providing cover for up to 30 days our short-term motorhome insurance is a great option if you’re borrowing a vehicle from a friend or family member for a trip. It means there’s no need to adjust your annual insurance policy or that of the owner.

And because temporary motorhome insurance is a separate policy, it means that there’s no impact on the owner’s cover or No Claims Discount should you need to make a claim . So, both parties can rest assured that you’re fully covered for the length of your trip.

It’s also quick and easy to take out temporary motorhome insurance with Dayinsure. Whether you need one-day motorhome insurance or cover for longer, get a quote and you could have it in minutes.

What does temporary motorhome insurance cover?

Dayinsure’s short-term motorhome insurance policies cover you to drive in the UK and EU for between one hour and 30 days.

You’ll get full, comprehensive cover in the UK from the time you take out the policy. You’ll also automatically get third-party cover to drive in the EU, with the option to extend this to fully comprehensive cover if you wish.

Your cover will include aspects such as:

  • damage to other people’s property
  • compensation for injury to others
  • loss or damage of the motorhome, including vehicle recovery and legal costs
  • accidental damage protection.

Take a look at our product information document for full details of what our short-term motorhome insurance covers and excludes.

Remember, you’ll need to make sure you have the correct category of licence to be able to legally drive the campervan or motorhome if it weighs over 3.5 tonnes.

Why take out short-term motorhome insurance?

Our cheap motorhome insurance is suitable for a wide range of scenarios and can be used when you don’t want to amend your annual policy. You might consider taking out a Dayinsure policy if:

  • you want to borrow or hire a motorhome from a friend or family member for a trip – we can provide temporary motorhome insurance that covers you for any period from one hour up to 30 days
  • you own your motorhome or campervan and want to lend it to family or friends – our short-term motorhome insurance allows them to drive with no threat to the No Claims Discount on your annual policy.

Can Dayinsure cover me to rent out my motorhome?

If you want to rent out a motorhome you own, our short-term insurance can provide the user (or ‘hiree’) with comprehensive cover that protects your asset.

However, it’s important to bear this point in mind:

To buy or arrange motorhome hire insurance on your hiree’s behalf, you must be authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). If you aren’t, you should direct the hiree to this site so they can buy our temporary motorhome insurance themselves.

Driving your motorhome in the EU

Your short-term motorhome insurance is only valid if your trip starts and ends in the UK. You’ll be automatically insured to drive in the UK and be covered third party in the rest of the EU. However, you can extend your cover to provide fully comprehensive EU insurance.

It’s a good idea to ensure you’ve got the correct paperwork when driving in the EU. We guarantee to upload our temporary policies to the Motor Insurance Database (MID) every seven days, but we always recommend having a copy of your Insurance Certificate with you.

Temporary motorhome insurance FAQs

If you’ve still got some burning questions about our short-term motorhome insurance, check out our FAQs:

Is there a difference between insuring a motorhome and a campervan?

While a motorhome and campervan differ slightly in terms of their size and typical facilities, there is no difference when it comes to insuring them with Dayinsure.

We offer short-term policies on both motorhomes and campervans, as long as the vehicle meets our criteria.

Does my driving licence allow me to drive a motorhome or campervan?

A full UK driving licence allows you to drive a motorhome that weighs up to 3.5 tonnes. You’ll need a category C1 licence to drive a vehicle weighing 3.5–7.5 tonnes. If you passed your test after 1st January 1997, you’ll need to take an additional test to obtain this type of licence.

It’s important to note that we only offer temporary motorhome insurance on vehicles 5 tonnes GVW and under.

Can I drive a motorhome on my car insurance?

You’ll usually need specialist insurance if you’re planning on driving a motorhome or campervan. These types of vehicles are used in a different way to cars, so your regular insurance policy won’t be suitable.

Can I take out short-term motorhome insurance on my own campervan?

Yes! If you need short-term cover on your own motorhome or campervan, we can help. Whether you’re between policies or you’ve bought a new vehicle and are yet to arrange annual cover before your trip, our temporary motorhome insurance can provide you with peace of mind.

Can I take out temporary motorhome insurance on a hired campervan?

Yes! Our policies provide cover on borrowed or hired motorhomes. So, whether you’re choosing to make use of a friend’s campervan or you’re formally hiring a motorhome, get an online quote from Dayinsure and see how affordable your short-term insurance could be.

Can I use the motorhome for business purposes?

Our motorhome insurance policies don’t cover you for business purposes and they’re mostly used for one-off trips or holidays.

If you’re looking for specific business cover, our temporary van insurance includes business use as standard. Alternatively, our short-term business car insurance offers a range of cover for work purposes.

Can I live in my motorhome or campervan?

If you’re planning on using a motorhome or campervan as a permanent place of residence, you won’t be covered by our short-term insurance policies. You’ll need to take out a policy that covers living in a motorhome and make sure you pitch it up on a permitted site.

Can I take out temporary motorhome insurance even if I don’t have a regular, annual policy?

Yes! Our cover is ideal for when you’re borrowing a motorhome or campervan, so you don’t need to have an existing annual policy.

Even if you do have annual cover on your main vehicle, our short-term motorhome insurance provides a separate policy that’s unrelated to your main cover.

Can I add another driver to my short-term motorhome insurance policy?

While you can’t add another named driver to your Dayinsure temporary motorhome insurance, they can take out a separate policy with us. This can be ideal if you’re planning on sharing the driving with another person on a road trip.

Do Dayinsure policies cover me to drive a motorhome abroad?

All our short-term motorhome insurance policies include third-party EU cover as standard, with the option of extending this to fully comprehensive cover.

If you’re driving a motorhome or campervan in the EU, your journey must begin and end in Great Britain, Northern Ireland or the Isle of Man.

Take a look at our product information for details on which EU countries are included in your cover.

What details do I need to provide to get a temporary motorhome insurance quote?

To get a quote online with Dayinsure, you’ll just need to provide your name, UK address, date of birth, GB licence, occupation and email address. You’ll also need to let us know the registration number, chassis manufacturer and engine size of the motorhome or campervan you want insuring.

Once you’ve given us this information, you could have your quote in minutes.
